The Four Way Test
The Four-Way Test
A Simple Guide for the Things We Think, Say and Do
The Four-Way Test is one of Rotary’s best-known guiding principles.
It gives Rotarians a simple way to think about our words, decisions, relationships and actions — both inside Rotary and in everyday life.
Of the things we think, say or do:
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
Why It Matters
The Four-Way Test isn’t about being perfect.
It’s simply a reminder to pause, consider other people, and make thoughtful decisions that build trust and strengthen relationships.
You’ll hear the Four-Way Test referenced throughout Rotary, but its ideas apply just as easily at work, at home and in our community.
Try It in Everyday Life
Before making a decision, sending a difficult message, handling a disagreement or taking action, ask yourself:
Is it true? Is it fair? Will it strengthen relationships? Will it help everyone involved?
Sometimes four simple questions can change the way we look at a situation.
Service Above Self
At Ankeny Evening Rotary, the Four-Way Test is one of the principles that helps guide how we serve, connect and work together.
